Students in the Open Doors after-school program Knitting for Neighbors at St. Albans Town Educational Center are in the process of making warm winter accessories to donate to the WCAX Channel 3 Mitten Tree.   To date they have produced 40 hats, scarves and mittens for the needy on their Nifty Knitters Looms. This is the second year that Mrs. Bates’ students have participated in the project.

Lights On Oct 30th

Lights On Celebration slated for October 30th

Three St. Albans after-school programs will host a Lights On After-School celebration on Thursday, October 30th from 4 – 7 p.m. at the St. Albans Town Educational Center. The event includes hands-on activities for adults and children and refreshments will be served.

“I am looking forward to this collaborative event because I see it as a celebration of our young people…the future of our community,” said Suzanne Skaflestad, Director of Open Doors program at the St. Albans City School.

The event celebrates the dynamic and powerful role that the two award-winning Open Doors After-School and Summer programs and YMCA Live Y’ers program plays in the community and in the lives of youth. Live Y’ers is open to all St. Albans K-6th grade youth and is based at SATEC, while Open Doors serves middle school students at both the St. Albans City School and the St. Albans Town Educational Center.

“We have some great activities for students to participate in,” said Lisa Sutton, Live Y’ers coordinator. “This is a fun carnival-like event that both parents and children can participate in.”

The event will feature booths about the programs, such as the Lotions and Potions and the new St. Albans City School majorette program, and information about what makes high quality youth programming. There will be arts and crafts activities, Fun and Games, and the National Guard’s obstacle course for students’ use. There will be a demonstration by Snyder’s Academy of Tae Kwon Do and a dance presentation by students in Mary Rose Bedard dance class.  Bedard is an instructor and the Open Doors coordinator at St. Albans Town Educational Center.

“And don’t forget the clown,” Sutton added.

The 9th annual Lights On celebration is a national initiative of the Afterschool Alliance. For more information about the SATEC initiative call: 527-7191.
